What Is XAT?
XAT is a national-level entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur for admission to postgraduate management programs at XLRI and its associate institutes. What sets XAT apart from other MBA entrance exams is its unique Decision Making section, which tests a candidate’s ability to apply ethical judgment and business reasoning to real-world scenarios — a skill set that’s distinctly different from standard aptitude testing.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years’ duration (or equivalent) in any discipline from a recognized university.
Final-Year Students: Eligible to apply, provided they complete their degree by the specified date.
Minimum Percentage: No minimum percentage requirement for eligibility.
Age Limit: No upper age limit.
(Always verify current-cycle eligibility details against the official notification.)
Exam Pattern
XAT is conducted in two parts within a single sitting:
| Part | Sections | Approx. Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation | ~170 minutes |
| Part 2 | General Knowledge | ~10 minutes |
| Total | ~95 MCQs across 4 sections | 180 minutes |
There are no sectional time limits within Part 1 — candidates can allocate their own time across its three sections, though Part 2 (GK) is time-boxed separately. Only the first three sections (Part 1) contribute to the overall percentile used for shortlisting; GK is considered separately by some institutes during final selection. Each correct answer earns +1 mark, with -0.25 for each incorrect answer in Part 1 sections.
(Exact section-wise question counts and any penalty rules for excessively skipped questions are revised periodically by XLRI — our faculty updates class material each cycle to match the current official pattern.)
Selection Process
- XAT Exam — Part 1 (percentile-determining) + Part 2 (GK)
- Shortlisting — Based on XAT percentile and academic profile
- Essay Writing, Group Discussion & Personal Interview — Conducted by XLRI and associate institutes
- Final Merit — Combined weightage of XAT score, academic record, and interview/essay performance, varying by institute
