What Is JNVST?
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential, co-educational central-government schools created to provide modern education to talented children, with a strong rural focus. Admission is merit-based through a written examination. Unlike defence-track schools, JNVs do not include military training, and selected students receive free education and residential support.
Eligibility Criteria
Class 6: The student should be studying in Class 5 in a government, government-aided, recognized school, or eligible NIOS course in the same district as the chosen JNV.
Residency: The candidate must satisfy district-residency and prior-study requirements stated in the current notification.
Class 9: The candidate must have passed Class 8 or be studying in Class 8 and satisfy the current lateral-entry rules.
Repeat Attempts: A candidate who has already appeared for the Class 6 JNVST is generally not eligible to reappear for Class 6.

Each correct answer carries 1.25 marks. There is no negative marking — students are encouraged to attempt every question. Mental Ability Test carries the highest weightage (50 of 100 marks) and is entirely non-verbal — questions are based purely on figures, diagrams, and patterns (odd-one-out, figure matching, pattern completion, mirror imaging, embedded figures), requiring no reading or prior academic knowledge. An additional 40 minutes is granted to eligible Divyang candidates. The Language Test is available in the candidate’s chosen medium from 21+ regional languages.
Minimum qualifying marks (per section): 14 marks in Mental Ability, 7 marks in Arithmetic, and 7 marks in Language — a candidate must clear all three individually, not just the overall total.
(Some recent-cycle sources describe a revised Section 1 structure combining MAT with an added Environmental Studies component — 20 MAT + 20 EVS questions within the same 40-question, 50-mark section. Confirm which structure applies for the current admission cycle against the official Information Bulletin before finalizing sectional practice material.)

No. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are educational institutions under the Ministry of Education and do not include a military-training component.
