SBI Clerk is a separate exam from IBPS Clerk, run by State Bank on its own paper and its own calendar. Students who prepare from generic “bank clerk” material and walk into SBI Clerk usually find two unpleasant surprises: the English section is harder than they expected, and the prelims sectional timing gives them no room to recover a bad start.
The Two Things That Catch People Out
Sectional timing in prelims. Twenty minutes each for English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, with no carrying time forward. A slow start in English cannot be repaid later. We drill a fixed per-section attempt plan until it is automatic.
English difficulty. SBI consistently sets a harder English paper than IBPS at the clerical level — longer comprehension passages, trickier error spotting and newer question formats. For students from Marathi and Hindi medium schooling this is the section that decides the result, so it gets a separate foundation track from day one rather than a revision pass at the end.
Exam Structure
| Stage | Sections | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prelims | English Language, Numerical Ability, Reasoning Ability | Sectional timing; qualifying only, marks do not carry to the final merit |
| Mains | General/Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning & Computer Aptitude | Decides the final merit list |
| Language test | Local language proficiency | Candidates who studied the state language at school are usually exempt |
Note that prelims marks do not count towards the final list. Everything after qualifying rests on mains — which is why we start mains-level General and Financial Awareness alongside prelims preparation rather than after it.
What the Course Covers
Numerical Ability — simplification, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, arithmetic. Speed drills throughout, because sectional timing punishes hesitation.
Reasoning Ability — puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking.
English Language — comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence rearrangement, word usage, with a separate grammar base track for non-English-medium students.
General & Financial Awareness — daily current affairs, banking and financial terminology, RBI policy, government schemes and static awareness. Fifteen minutes a day for a year beats a month of cramming.
Computer Aptitude — fundamentals, MS Office, internet and networking basics, security and shortcuts.
Local language proficiency — guidance on the Marathi language requirement and who is exempt.

The English section usually is, and sectional timing in prelims makes SBI less forgiving. The syllabus itself is very close, so one preparation cycle covers both.
Do prelims marks count in the final selection?
No. Prelims is qualifying only — the merit list is built from mains. This is the single most useful thing to know when planning your study time.
Is the Marathi language test compulsory?
Candidates applying for Maharashtra vacancies must be proficient in the local language, but those who studied it at school level are generally exempt from the test. Confirm against the current notification.
Can I prepare for SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk in the same year?
Yes, and you should — the notifications fall at different times and the syllabus overlaps almost completely.
Do you have batches for working candidates?
Yes — weekend batches and online coaching both run for banking courses.
