What Is Railway Group D?
Railway Group D recruits candidates for Level-1 posts across Indian Railways — entry-level roles like Track Maintainer, Helper/Assistant, and Pointsman that keep railway operations running on the ground. It’s one of the largest recruitment drives conducted by RRB by applicant volume, involving a Computer-Based Test followed by a mandatory Physical Efficiency Test, since these roles demand physical fitness alongside basic academic knowledge.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification: 10th pass (Matriculation) or ITI/equivalent from a recognized board, as specified for Level-1 posts.
Age Limit: Typically ranges within the government-notified bracket for Level-1 posts, with age relaxation for reserved categories as per government norms.
Nationality: Indian citizen (certain provisions apply for specified categories, per official notification).
(Always verify current-cycle age limits and qualification requirements against the official notification — our Notifications page will always reflect the latest updates.)
Exam Pattern — Computer Based Test (CBT)
| Section | Notes |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | |
| General Science | |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | |
| General Awareness & Current Affairs | |
| Total | 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes (120 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates) |
Each correct answer carries 1 mark, with 1/3 mark deducted for every incorrect answer. Minimum qualifying marks are typically around 40% for UR/EWS and 30% for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/SC/ST candidates.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Candidates who qualify the CBT are called for a mandatory Physical Efficiency Test, which assesses physical fitness relevant to Level-1 field roles. PET is qualifying in nature — candidates must clear it to remain in contention, regardless of their CBT score.
(Exact PET standards — running distance, time limits, and weight-carrying requirements for male and female candidates — are specified in the official notification and should be confirmed each cycle.)
Selection Process
- Computer Based Test (CBT) — Qualifying and shortlisting stage
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET) — Mandatory, qualifying in nature
- Document Verification & Medical Examination — Final stage before appointment
All stages are qualifying in nature; final selection is based on merit, document verification, and medical fitness.
