RRB NTPC has two syllabi, not one, and the difference between CBT 1 and CBT 2 is where most candidates come unstuck. CBT 1 can be cleared largely on General Awareness. CBT 2 cannot — it leans harder on Mathematics and Reasoning, and candidates who coasted through the first stage meet a wall at the second.
Stages
| Stage | Questions | Time | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBT 1 | 100 | 90 minutes | Screening; marks do not carry forward |
| CBT 2 | 120 | 90 minutes | Decides the merit list |
| Typing Skill Test or CBAT | — | — | Qualifying, post-dependent |
| Document verification & medical | — | — | Final stage |
Negative marking of one third of a mark applies in both CBTs.
CBT 1 Syllabus
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | 40 |
| Mathematics | 30 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 30 |
General Awareness is the largest section and by far the cheapest to score in. Starting it in month eight is the most common planning error in this exam.
CBT 2 Syllabus
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | 50 |
| Mathematics | 35 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 35 |
Same three subjects, higher difficulty, and Maths and Reasoning together now outweigh General Awareness. Quantitative depth has to be built from the start, in parallel with CBT 1 preparation, not after the CBT 1 result.
Subject Detail
Mathematics
Number system, decimals and fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentage, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, average, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, elementary algebra, geometry and trigonometry, elementary statistics.
General Intelligence & Reasoning
Analogies, number and alphabetical series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations, similarities and differences, relationships, analytical reasoning, syllogism, jumbling, Venn diagrams, puzzle, data sufficiency, statement-conclusion, statement-courses of action, decision making, maps and interpretation of graphs.
General Awareness
Current events of national and international importance, games and sports, Indian art and culture, Indian literature, monuments and places, general science and life science up to Class 10, history of India and the freedom struggle, physical social and economic geography of India and the world, Indian polity and governance, Indian economy, UN and world organisations, environmental issues, computer and applications, common abbreviations, transport systems, Indian and world organisations, and flagship government programmes plus the history of Indian Railways specifically.
That last item is worth underlining. Railway-specific static awareness appears every cycle and is routinely missed by candidates preparing from generic SSC material.
Skill Stages
Typing Skill Test — for typist and clerical posts; qualifying only, but it does eliminate people.
Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) — for Station Master and Traffic Assistant. A minimum T-score is required with no relaxation for any category, and it cannot be prepared for in the last week.
Normalisation
Because the exam runs across many shifts of differing difficulty, raw scores are statistically adjusted so candidates from a harder shift are not penalised. Your position relative to your shift matters more than your raw mark, which is why consistent accuracy beats gambling on attempt count.
Posts Covered
Graduate level: Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist. Undergraduate level: Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist. Eligibility differs by post, so your post preference list should be built around your qualification and your comfort with the CBAT and typing stages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do CBT 1 marks count towards the final selection?
No. CBT 1 is screening only. The merit list is built from CBT 2, which is why CBT 2-level preparation should run alongside from the start.
What is normalisation and why does it matter?
Scores are adjusted across shifts of different difficulty so nobody is penalised for drawing a harder paper. It means accuracy relative to your shift matters more than raw attempts.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, one third of a mark per wrong answer in both CBTs.
Which section should I prioritise?
General Awareness for scoring, from day one. Mathematics and Reasoning for surviving CBT 2. Doing only the first is the classic NTPC failure pattern.
Is typing compulsory for all posts?
No, only for typist and clerical posts. Station Master and Traffic Assistant applicants sit the CBAT instead.
How long is the full recruitment cycle?
Railway cycles are long, often more than a year from notification to joining. Keep preparing for parallel exams while the process runs.
