What Is CLAT?
CLAT is India’s gateway entrance exam for law education, used for admission to the 5-Year Integrated LLB program (UG) and the 1-Year LLM program (PG) at National Law Universities across the country. Scores are also accepted by numerous private law colleges and referenced by some public sector organizations for legal recruitment, making it one of the most widely recognized law entrance scores in India.
Eligibility Criteria
For UG (5-Year Integrated LLB):
- Educational Qualification: Passed Class 12 or equivalent from a recognized board
- Minimum Qualifying Marks: 45% for General/OBC/PwD/NRI/OCI/PIO, 40% for SC/ST
- Age Limit: No upper age limit
- Appearing candidates (Class 12 in the current year) are also eligible to apply
For PG (LLM):
- Educational Qualification: LLB degree (3-year or 5-year) or equivalent from a recognized university
- Minimum Qualifying Marks: 50% for General/OBC/PwD, 45% for SC/ST
- Age Limit: No upper age limit

(Always verify current-cycle qualifying percentages against the official notification, as these are set fresh each year by the Consortium.)
Exam Pattern — UG-CLAT
| Section | Approx. Weightage |
|---|---|
| English Language | 20% |
| Current Affairs including General Knowledge | 25% |
| Legal Reasoning | 25% |
| Logical Reasoning | 20% |
| Quantitative Techniques | 10% |
| Total | 120 questions, 120 minutes |
Since 2020, CLAT has followed a passage-based format — each section is built around a short passage followed by around 5–6 questions, testing comprehension and application rather than rote recall. Current Affairs and Legal Reasoning together carry roughly half the total weightage, making them the highest-priority sections. Each correct answer earns 1 mark, with 0.25 marks deducted for every incorrect answer.
Exam Pattern — PG-CLAT
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Total Questions | 120 |
| Duration | 120 minutes |
| Format | Objective, subject-specific legal knowledge |
| Negative Marking | 0.25 marks deducted per incorrect answer |
Unlike UG-CLAT, PG-CLAT requires genuine prior legal knowledge — it tests understanding of constitutional law, jurisprudence, and other core law subjects rather than general reasoning ability.
(Exact section-wise weightage within UG-CLAT is revised periodically by the Consortium — our faculty updates class material each cycle to match the current official pattern.)
