NDA is the only major defence entry a student can attempt straight after Class 12, and the syllabus reflects that — it is school mathematics and school science, examined harder than school ever examines them. The written paper is not where most candidates fail, though. The SSB interview that follows eliminates far more, which is why the two halves need preparing together.
Exam Structure
| Stage | Paper | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written | Mathematics | 300 | 2.5 hours |
| Written | General Ability Test (GAT) | 600 | 2.5 hours |
| SSB | Intelligence and Personality Test | 900 | 5 days |
Read those numbers again. GAT carries twice the marks of Mathematics, and SSB carries as much as the entire written exam. Yet most aspirants spend eighty per cent of their preparation on Maths. That misallocation is the single most common reason capable candidates do not make the final merit list.
There is negative marking in both written papers.
Mathematics Syllabus (300 marks)
- Algebra — sets, Venn diagrams, De Morgan laws, Cartesian product, relations, complex numbers, binary number system, quadratic equations, arithmetic and geometric progressions, permutation and combination, binomial theorem, logarithms.
- Matrices and Determinants — types of matrices, operations, determinant properties, adjoint and inverse, solving systems of linear equations by Cramer’s rule and matrix method.
- Trigonometry — angles and measures, ratios and identities, sum and difference formulae, multiple and sub-multiple angles, inverse trigonometric functions, heights and distances, properties of triangles.
- Analytical Geometry (2D and 3D) — rectangular coordinates, distance and section formulae, straight lines, circle, standard forms of parabola, ellipse and hyperbola, direction cosines, plane and line in space, sphere.
- Differential Calculus — functions, limits, continuity, derivatives and their applications, increasing and decreasing functions, maxima and minima.
- Integral Calculus and Differential Equations — integration by substitution and by parts, definite integrals, applications to areas, formation and solution of differential equations.
- Vector Algebra — vectors in two and three dimensions, scalar and vector products, applications.
- Statistics and Probability — frequency distribution, measures of central tendency and dispersion, correlation and regression, random experiments, conditional probability, Bayes theorem, binomial distribution.
General Ability Test Syllabus (600 marks)
Part A — English (200 marks)
Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension, cohesion, spotting errors, sentence improvement, antonyms and synonyms, ordering of words and sentences. Straightforward in style, but 200 marks is a great deal to leave to chance.
Part B — General Knowledge (400 marks)
| Section | Approx. marks | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 100 | Motion, work and energy, heat, light, sound, magnetism, electricity, simple machines, measurement |
| Chemistry | 60 | Physical and chemical changes, elements and compounds, acids bases and salts, carbon, fertilisers, common preparations |
| General Science | 40 | Cells, human body systems, food and nutrition, common diseases, solar system, achievements of scientists |
| History & Freedom Movement | 80 | Indian culture, freedom struggle, Constitution, Panchayati Raj, socialism, world history |
| Geography | 80 | Earth and its motions, atmosphere, climate, ocean currents, regions of India, agriculture, minerals, transport |
| Current Events | 40 | India and the world, sports, defence, appointments |
Where GAT is won: Physics and Geography carry 180 marks between them and are the most predictable. Candidates who treat GAT as a revision-week subject give away marks they cannot recover in Maths.
SSB Interview (900 marks)
Stage 1 — Officer Intelligence Rating test and Picture Perception & Description Test. Roughly half the candidates are screened out here on day one.
Stage 2 — Psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, Self Description), Group Testing Officer tasks (group discussion, group planning, progressive group task, half group task, command task, lecturette, individual obstacles) and the Personal Interview, followed by the conference.
Officer-like qualities — effective intelligence, reasoning ability, organising ability, social adaptability, courage, initiative — are trainable. Our defence coaching treats SSB as a taught module with mock sessions and written feedback, not as advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can girls apply for NDA?
Yes. Women candidates are eligible. Branch-wise vacancies change between cycles, so confirm against the current notification.
Do I need Physics and Maths in Class 12?
For the Army wing, Class 12 in any stream is generally accepted. For the Air Force and Naval wings, Physics and Mathematics at Class 12 are required.
Which paper should I prepare first?
GAT, because it carries 600 of the 900 written marks and is the section most candidates under-prepare. Maths matters, but it is half the weight.
Is there negative marking in NDA?
Yes, in both papers. Educated elimination beats blind guessing.
When should I start preparing?
Class 11 is ideal, so the Mathematics syllabus is built alongside your board preparation rather than crammed after it. A focused six-month plan can still work for a Class 12 student’s first attempt.
How many attempts do I get?
There is no fixed cap on attempts, but the age window is narrow — in practice most candidates get three or four attempts. Check the current notification for exact age limits.
