The SSC Multi-Tasking Staff examination is a major opportunity for candidates seeking central-government support-staff roles. This page outlines the usual Computer Based Examination focus areas and a practical preparation approach. The current notification on the official Staff Selection Commission website remains the final authority.
SSC MTS exam pattern
The Computer Based Examination is divided into two sessions. Session-I broadly tests Numerical and Mathematical Ability and Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving. Session-II broadly tests General Awareness and English Language and Comprehension. Recent notices have applied different negative-marking rules across sessions, so candidates must check the active notice.
| Area | Preparation focus |
|---|---|
| Numerical Ability | Arithmetic and basic data interpretation |
| Reasoning | Logical and non-verbal problem solving |
| General Awareness | Static GK, science and current affairs |
| English | Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension |
Numerical and Mathematical Ability
Revise integers, LCM and HCF, decimals and fractions, BODMAS, percentage, ratio and proportion, averages, simple interest, profit and loss, discount, time and work, area and perimeter, distance and time, lines and angles, graphs, squares and square roots. Focus first on accuracy with basic calculations.
Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving
Practise alpha-numeric series, coding-decoding, analogy, directions, similarities and differences, jumbling, problem solving, non-verbal reasoning, calendar, clock and age calculations. Timed short sets are more useful than reading solutions passively.
General Awareness and English
For General Awareness, revise history, geography, culture, civics, economics, basic science, environment and current events. English preparation should cover vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, correct usage and comprehension.
Eight-week preparation plan
- Weeks 1-2: take a diagnostic test and repair basics.
- Weeks 3-4: complete topic-wise timed drills.
- Weeks 5-6: use sectional tests and an error log.
- Weeks 7-8: take full mocks and revise repeated errors.
Mock-test method
After every mock, record correct answers, wrong answers, time used and easy questions missed. Classify every error: concept, calculation, misread instruction, memory gap or bad question selection. Reattempt the errors after two days instead of immediately moving to another mock.
