NDA vs CDS: Which Defence Exam Should You Target?

Almost every graduate aiming for the armed forces eventually asks the same question: NDA or CDS? The honest answer is that for most people the choice is already made by one fact — whether you are still in school or already hold a degree. NDA is for Class 12 students, CDS is for graduates, and beyond that starting point the two exams diverge in almost every other way. Here is the comparison worth reading before you commit a year of preparation to either.

The Eligibility Line That Decides Everything

NDA is open to unmarried candidates who have completed or are appearing for Class 12. CDS requires a graduate degree, and the specific stream required depends on which service you are targeting — the Indian Military Academy and Officers Training Academy accept any degree, while the Air Force and Naval Academy entries have stream-specific requirements. Age limits and exact eligibility conditions are revised by the UPSC for each notification, so always check the current official notice rather than planning around last year’s numbers.

If you are still in Class 11 or 12, NDA is your only entry point between these two — CDS is not open to you yet. If you have already graduated, NDA is closed and CDS is the equivalent route into the same career.

How the Written Papers Differ

NDA’s written exam has two papers: Mathematics worth 300 marks, and a General Ability Test worth 600 marks covering English and General Knowledge. The General Ability Test carries twice the weight of Mathematics, which surprises most first-time aspirants who assume Maths is the harder half to worry about.

CDS is structured differently depending on which academy you are targeting. For IMA, INA and Air Force Academy, the paper covers English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. For OTC (Officers Training Academy, a non-technical short service entry), there is no Mathematics paper at all — only English and General Knowledge. This is one of the most overlooked details in CDS preparation: if you are targeting OTC specifically, spending months on Mathematics is time you could have spent elsewhere.

The SSB Interview Is Identical in Structure

Both exams lead to the same Services Selection Board process once you clear the written stage — screening, psychological tests, group testing tasks and a personal interview, spread across several days. The assessment criteria are the same regardless of whether you arrived via NDA or CDS, because the board is evaluating the same thing: whether you are officer material, not how well you memorised a syllabus.

What differs is preparation time. NDA candidates, entering at 16-19, generally get more structured runway to work on SSB-relevant skills such as group discussion and situational judgement before their board. CDS candidates are often preparing for SSB alongside job applications or final-year exams, so time management around the interview stage matters more.

Training Length and What You Actually Get Out of It

This is where the two paths genuinely diverge. NDA selectees join the National Defence Academy for three years of tri-service training, followed by pre-commission training at their respective service academy — a total path of four to five years before commissioning, but they emerge with a full graduate degree awarded by the NDA in addition to a permanent commission.

CDS selectees already hold a degree, so their training is shorter and role-specific: roughly a year to eighteen months depending on the academy and service. IMA and INA lead to permanent commissions; OTA leads to a Short Service Commission, which has a fixed initial tenure rather than a career-length appointment. Candidates who want a permanent, career-length commission through CDS should target IMA or INA rather than OTA.

Which Should You Actually Target?

Three straightforward situations:

  • You are in Class 11 or 12 and certain about a defence career. NDA is the only door open to you right now, and starting early gives you years to build both the academic and physical fitness base the SSB expects.
  • You are a graduate targeting a permanent commission. Prepare for CDS with IMA or INA as your target academy, and treat OTA as a secondary option rather than your primary plan, since it does not lead to a permanent career.
  • You are a graduate open to a shorter service commitment. OTA through CDS is worth considering, and skipping the Mathematics paper preparation for it frees up real time for English and General Knowledge instead.

There is no version of this decision where preparing for “defence exams” in general beats naming one exam and building toward its actual paper. The syllabus overlap between NDA and CDS is real but not complete, and neither one rewards a generic plan.

How We Prepare Students for Either Path

Our defence batch is built around whichever exam a student names as primary in the first week, rather than a shared generic syllabus. Mathematics is only included for candidates who need it — NDA students and CDS students targeting IMA, INA or Air Force Academy — while OTA-only CDS candidates work through an English- and GK-heavy track instead. SSB preparation, including group tasks and psychological test formats, is built into the course from the start for every student rather than added on after a written result comes in.

For the full topic-level syllabus, see our NDA syllabus and exam pattern and CDS syllabus and exam pattern guides. School students can also read our CDS revision plan for how the final weeks of preparation are typically structured once you know your target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for both NDA and CDS?

No, not for the same intake — NDA is for candidates who have not yet graduated, and CDS requires a completed degree. You move from being NDA-eligible to CDS-eligible as your education stage changes, not both at once.

Which is harder, NDA or CDS?

They are hard in different ways rather than one being harder overall. NDA’s General Ability Test rewards broad, sustained General Knowledge built over years; CDS candidates have less runway but more academic maturity going in. The SSB stage is equally demanding for both.

Does CDS always include a Mathematics paper?

No. IMA, INA and Air Force Academy entries through CDS include Elementary Mathematics, but OTA (the non-technical Short Service Commission entry) does not. Confirm the paper structure for your specific target academy in the current official notification.

Is a CDS OTA commission permanent?

No. OTA leads to a Short Service Commission with a fixed initial tenure, not a permanent career appointment. IMA and INA entries through CDS do lead to permanent commissions.
