IBPS PO Syllabus and Exam Pattern

The IBPS PO syllabus is short. That is what misleads people. There is very little to learn and an enormous amount to practise, which is the opposite of how most aspirants allocate their time.

Exam Structure

Stage Sections Counts towards final merit?
Prelims English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability No — qualifying only
Mains Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, English Language, Data Analysis & Interpretation, plus a descriptive paper Yes
Interview Personal interview Yes

Prelims has sectional timing — you cannot carry unused minutes from one section into the next. A slow start in English cannot be repaid in Quant later, which is why a fixed per-section attempt plan matters more than raw ability.

Prelims Syllabus

English Language

Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, para jumbles, fill in the blanks, word usage and the sentence-completion formats that have appeared in recent cycles.

Quantitative Aptitude

Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation (tabular, line, bar, caselet, pie), and arithmetic — percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance, mixture and alligation, partnership, probability, permutation and combination.

Reasoning Ability

Puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, alphanumeric series, data sufficiency.

Where prelims is won: puzzles and seating arrangement carry the largest single share of the reasoning section, and data interpretation carries the largest share of quant. Everything else is support.

Mains Syllabus

Reasoning & Computer Aptitude

Higher-difficulty puzzles, input-output, logical reasoning, critical reasoning, statement and assumption, plus computer aptitude — fundamentals, MS Office, internet, networking, database basics and security.

Data Analysis & Interpretation

Caselet DI, missing DI, arithmetic DI, data sufficiency and quantity comparison. This is the section that decides most mains results, and it is where the gap between prelims-level and mains-level preparation is widest.

General, Economy & Banking Awareness

Current affairs of roughly the last six months, banking terminology, RBI functions and monetary policy, financial and economic terms, government schemes, budget and economic survey basics, and static awareness. Fifteen minutes every day for a year beats a month of cramming.

English Language

Comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, para jumbles and error detection at a higher difficulty than prelims.

Descriptive Paper

Letter writing and essay writing, evaluated seriously. A descriptive paper you have never had corrected is not preparation — every submission should come back with written feedback.

Interview

Your background and academic record, why banking, current banking and economic affairs, and basic behavioural questions. Mock interviews with a panel are worth more here than any amount of reading.

A Realistic Preparation Order

  1. Build the quant and reasoning base first — concepts before speed.
  2. Start daily current affairs from day one, not from month eight.
  3. Move to timed sectional practice, then full prelims mocks with section timers.
  4. Begin mains-level DI and descriptive writing before prelims results, not after.
  5. Analyse every mock properly — three well-analysed mocks beat fifteen unanalysed ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do prelims marks count in the final IBPS PO selection?

No. Prelims is qualifying only. The final merit comes from mains and the interview.

Is there negative marking?

Yes, typically one quarter of a mark for each wrong answer in the objective papers.

What is the eligibility for IBPS PO?

A bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Age limits and category relaxations are set in each cycle’s notification.

How is IBPS PO different from SBI PO?

SBI sets a harder paper, especially in reasoning and data interpretation, and adds a Group Exercise round before the interview. The syllabus is nearly identical, so one preparation cycle covers both.

How many hours a day do I need?

Three to four focused hours on weekdays with longer weekend sessions works for most working aspirants over six to eight months. Consistency beats marathon days.

Which section should I fix first?

Whichever one you are avoiding. That is almost always data interpretation or puzzles, and it is almost always where the marks are.
