SSC CGL Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Most SSC CGL aspirants can recite the syllabus and still lose the exam, because the syllabus tells you what appears and not what matters. Below is the full structure, along with an honest note on where the marks actually sit.

Exam Structure

Stage Format Purpose
Tier 1 Objective, computer based Qualifying screen; marks do not carry into the final merit
Tier 2 Objective, multiple sessions and papers Decides the final merit list
Skill test Typing / Data Entry, for applicable posts Qualifying only
Document verification — Final stage

The single most useful thing to understand: Tier 1 is only a gate. Your rank is built in Tier 2. Aspirants who spend ten months perfecting Tier 1 and then meet Tier 2 unprepared are the most common failure pattern in this exam.

Tier 1 Syllabus

Four sections of 25 questions each, 2 marks per question, with negative marking, in a single 60-minute paper. That is roughly 36 seconds per question, which is why speed is not optional.

General Intelligence & Reasoning

Analogies, similarities and differences, space visualisation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding-decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning.

Where the marks are: this is the fastest-scoring section in the paper. The target is full marks with time left over, not “most of it”.

General Awareness

India and its neighbouring countries — History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy and Scientific Research, plus the Indian Constitution and current affairs.

Where the marks are: static and predictable, which makes it the best return on study time in the whole exam. It is also the section most candidates leave to the last month, which is precisely the wrong order.

Quantitative Aptitude

Number systems, percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work, basic algebraic identities, linear equations, triangles and their properties, circles, polygons, mensuration, trigonometry, heights and distances, histogram, frequency polygon, bar diagram and pie chart.

Where the marks are: geometry, mensuration and trigonometry. Most Thane students we see arrive strong on arithmetic and weak on these three, and they are exactly the areas Tier 2 leans on.

English Comprehension

Reading comprehension, error spotting, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, spelling, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, sentence rearrangement and cloze passage.

Where the marks are: vocabulary. SSC English is far more vocabulary-driven than banking English, so daily word lists and previous-year vocabulary pay off more than grammar theory.

Tier 2 Syllabus

Tier 2 runs across sessions covering Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning and General Intelligence, English Language and Comprehension, General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and a Data Entry Speed Test, with statistics and finance papers for the posts that require them.

  • Mathematical Abilities — the Tier 1 syllabus at genuinely higher difficulty, with advanced algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • English Language & Comprehension — longer passages, harder vocabulary, more error detection.
  • Computer Knowledge — fundamentals, MS Office, internet and networking basics, cyber security.
  • Statistics — for Junior Statistical Officer applicants.
  • General Studies: Finance & Economics — for Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer applicants.

Posts You Can Get

Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer, Assistant Section Officer, Inspector of Income Tax, Inspector (Central Excise / Preventive Officer / Examiner), Sub Inspector in CBI and NIA, Assistant Enforcement Officer, Junior Statistical Officer, Auditor, Accountant, Tax Assistant and Upper Division Clerk, among others. Which post you get depends on your rank and your post preference order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Tier 1 marks count towards the final selection?

No. Tier 1 is qualifying only. The merit list is built from Tier 2, which is why Tier 2 preparation should start alongside Tier 1 rather than after it.

Is there negative marking in SSC CGL?

Yes, in both tiers, though the deduction differs by paper. Blind guessing loses marks — we train educated elimination instead.

Which section should I prepare first?

General Awareness, from day one, because it is finite and predictable. Leave it last and you will be cramming a section you could have absorbed fifteen minutes a day for a year.

What is the qualification required?

A bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with additional requirements for a few specialised posts. Age limits vary by post and category — check the current notification.

How long does SSC CGL preparation take?

Eight to twelve months for a focused fresher, less for someone who has already cleared a Tier 1.

Is the syllabus the same every year?

The syllabus is stable; the exam pattern, number of tiers and marking scheme have changed several times in recent years. Always confirm the pattern against the current notification.
