Every year in Maharashtra the same argument plays out in coaching classrooms around August. One group is convinced CAT is the only exam that matters. Another has quietly decided MH CET is the safer bet and stopped taking CAT seriously. Both are usually making the decision for the wrong reason.
These are not two versions of the same exam. They reward almost opposite skills, and the strategy that gets you a good CAT percentile can actively hurt your MH CET score.
The Core Difference: Selection vs Speed
CAT rewards selection. Negative marking, sectional time limits, and a paper where a handful of DILR sets decide your percentile. The skill being tested is judgment — knowing which set to attempt and, more importantly, which to walk away from after ninety seconds.
MH CET rewards volume. Around 200 questions in 150 minutes with no negative marking. That single fact changes everything: there is no reason to leave a question blank, and the aspirant who attempts 180 questions at 70% accuracy will usually beat the careful one who attempts 140 at 85%.
A student who has trained for months to be selective and cautious walks into MH CET and under-attempts. It happens every year.
Section-Wise Comparison
| CAT | MH CET MBA | |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | VARC, DILR, Quantitative Ability | Logical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability |
| Negative marking | Yes | No |
| Sectional timing | Yes — cannot move back | No — one common time pool |
| Dominant section | DILR decides most percentiles | Logical Reasoning carries the largest share |
| Unique element | Long, dense RC passages | Abstract Reasoning — appears in no other major MBA paper |
| Target colleges | IIMs and top private B-schools | JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA and Maharashtra CAP institutes |
Abstract Reasoning: The Section Nobody Prepares For
Abstract Reasoning is unique to MH CET and it is pure pattern recognition — figure series, analogies and odd-one-out. Students preparing from CAT material have literally never seen it, discover it in a mock three weeks before the exam, and lose easy marks in the section with the highest scoring potential in the whole paper. It needs perhaps fifteen hours of dedicated practice, and those are the highest-return fifteen hours in MH CET preparation.
Which Should You Target?
Prioritise CAT if…
You are aiming for an IIM or a top national B-school, you have ten to twelve months, and your quantitative base is already reasonable. CAT preparation also covers most of what NMAT and XAT need, so one cycle opens several doors.
Prioritise MH CET if…
Your realistic target is JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA or the Maharashtra CAP institutes, you are strong at fast pattern-based work, or you are a Maharashtra domicile candidate where the state quota genuinely improves your odds. For many Mumbai and Thane students this is the more rational primary target, not the fallback.
Do Both if…
Honestly, most Maharashtra students should. The quantitative and verbal base is shared, so the additional cost of adding MH CET to a CAT preparation is roughly: Abstract Reasoning practice, plus retraining your attempt strategy for a no-negative-marking paper. That is a few weeks, not a few months, and it gives you a second admission route in the same year.
The Mistake to Avoid
Do not treat MH CET as “the backup I will look at in January”. Students who do that walk in with CAT reflexes — over-cautious, under-attempting, unfamiliar with Abstract Reasoning — and score well below what their actual ability deserves. If MH CET is on your list at all, give it its own mocks and its own attempt strategy from December onward.
Preparing in Thane or Mumbai
D.I.C.E. Institute runs both tracks with the same faculty, so students can prepare in one place rather than splitting across institutes. See CAT coaching, MH CET MBA coaching, or the combined MBA and Law entrance course. Both include our mock test series with separate CAT-format and CET-format papers, because practising the wrong format is worse than not practising at all.
Batches run at Thane, Dadar and Borivali, with weekend options for working professionals. Book a free demo class to talk through which track fits you.
MBA aspirants who live or work in Mumbai can also compare local study options through competitive exam coaching in Mumbai.
If Dadar is the easier station for you, the same CAT and CET preparation runs as MBA entrance coaching at our Dadar centre, where the Central and Western lines meet.
Working alongside preparation? Follow our 12-week MBA CET study plan for working professionals in Dadar to organise weekday practice, weekend mocks and error review. If CAT is your primary target, compare the CAT coaching course in Dadar and confirm the current exam-specific batch before joining.
