What Is the RIMC Entrance Exam?

RIMC, established in 1922, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious military schools and a key feeder institution for the National Defence Academy. Admission is through a highly competitive all-India descriptive examination for Class 8, followed by a Viva Voce and medical examination. Because every written paper is descriptive, preparation must build clear written expression and method, not only correct answers.

    Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification: The candidate should be studying in Class 7 or have passed Class 7 from a recognized school at the time of admission.

Age Limit: Commonly between 11.5 and 13 years as of 1 January or 1 July of the admission year, depending on the session.

Gender: Both boys and girls are eligible.

Application Route: Applications are submitted through the relevant State Government or Union Territory education office.

Verify the exact birth-date range in the current notification.

    Written Examination Pattern

    PaperMarks
    English125
    Mathematics200
    General Knowledge75
    Total400

All papers are descriptive and conducted offline over a combined duration of approximately 4.5 hours. Mathematics and General Knowledge may be answered in English or Hindi. There is no negative marking. Candidates generally need at least 50% in each individual subject to reach the next stage.

    Viva Voce and Medical Examination

The Viva Voce carries 50 marks and assesses intelligence, personality, confidence, communication, and general awareness. Candidates who qualify are then examined against the required medical and visual standards.

    Selection Process

    1. Written Examination: English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge; descriptive, with minimum marks required in each.
    2. Viva Voce: Oral assessment of personality and confidence.
    3. Medical Examination: Vision and general fitness standards.
    4. Final Merit: State-wise list based on written and Viva Voce performance.

    Syllabus Covered

    • English: Grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, essay and descriptive writing.
    • Mathematics: Application-based Class 6-8 problems solved under timed conditions.
    • General Knowledge: Current affairs, general science, history, and geography.
    • Viva Voce: Confidence, communication, personality, and general-awareness practice.
