What Is the NDA Exam?
The NDA exam is the entry point for students who want to join the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force as commissioned officers straight after Class 12 — one of the few defence exams open to students still in school. It’s conducted twice a year by UPSC and involves a written exam followed by the SSB (Services Selection Board) interview, a rigorous multi-day assessment of leadership qualities, physical fitness, and psychological suitability, before final selection and medical clearance.
Eligibility Criteria
Age Limit: Candidates must fall within a specific age bracket (approximately 16.5–19.5 years) as defined by each cycle’s official notification, and must be unmarried.
Educational Qualification:
- Army Wing: 12th pass (or appearing) under the 10+2 pattern from a recognized board, in any stream
- Air Force & Naval Wings: 12th pass (or appearing) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a recognized board
Gender: Both male and female candidates are eligible to apply for NDA & NA across all wings.
Physical Standards: Candidates must meet specific medical and physical fitness standards to be considered for the SSB and subsequent training.

Both papers are objective type, conducted offline. The Mathematics paper is set in English; the GAT paper is available in both English and Hindi. Negative marking of approximately 0.33 marks applies for each incorrect answer.

The SSB is a comprehensive 5-day assessment process, including:
- Screening Tests — Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test
- Psychological Tests — Thematic Apperception Test, Word Association Test, Situation Reaction Test, Self-Description
- Group Testing — Group discussions, group tasks, and outdoor exercises assessing teamwork and leadership
- Personal Interview — One-on-one assessment of officer-like qualities and overall suitability
Candidates must clear the written exam first to be called for SSB. Final merit is based on the combined written exam and SSB scores.
