What Is UGC NET?
UGC NET determines eligibility for Assistant Professor positions and Junior Research Fellowships in Indian universities and colleges, and is also accepted for PhD admission at many institutions. Conducted by NTA twice a year across more than 80 subjects, it consists of two papers taken back-to-back in a single session — Paper 1, common to all candidates regardless of subject, and Paper 2, focused entirely on the candidate’s chosen postgraduate subject.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification: Master’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for reserved categories) in a relevant subject from a recognized university. Candidates in their final year of a Master’s degree may also apply provisionally in many cycles.
Age Limit:
- Assistant Professor eligibility: No upper age limit
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): Upper age limit applies (commonly around 30 years), with relaxation for reserved categories as per government norms
Subject Selection: Candidates must appear for the subject they completed their postgraduate degree in, or a closely related subject where their exact subject isn’t listed.
(Always confirm current-cycle qualification percentage and JRF age limit against the official notification, as these are reviewed periodically.)
Exam Pattern
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 50 | 100 | Teaching & Research Aptitude — common for all candidates |
| Paper 2 | 100 | 200 | Subject-specific, based on candidate’s chosen postgraduate subject |
| Total | 150 | 300 | Single session, 3 hours |
Both papers are objective-type MCQs, conducted in one continuous 3-hour session with no fixed time division between the two papers — candidates can allocate their own time within the window. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
(Exact question distribution within Paper 1 topics is revised periodically by NTA — our faculty updates class material each cycle to match the current official pattern.)
Selection Process
- Paper 1 + Paper 2 — Combined single-session exam
- Merit List / Cutoff-Based Result — Based on combined score, category-wise cutoffs, and subject-wise vacancy availability for JRF
- Result Categories — Candidates may qualify for Assistant Professor eligibility only, or for both Assistant Professor and JRF, depending on their score relative to cutoffs
(Unlike many competitive exams, UGC NET does not include an interview stage — final result is based entirely on the written exam score.)
Syllabus Covered
- Paper 1 — Teaching & Research Aptitude: Teaching aptitude, research methodology, reading comprehension, communication, mathematical reasoning & aptitude, data interpretation, ICT, people & environment, higher education system
- Paper 2 — Subject-Specific: Complete postgraduate-level syllabus for the candidate’s chosen subject (available across 80+ subjects, from Commerce and Management to Political Science, English, History, and more)
