    What Is IELTS?

IELTS is the world’s most widely accepted English language proficiency test, used for university admissions, work visas, and migration applications across 140+ countries. It comes in two formats depending on your purpose: IELTS Academic, required for higher education and professional registration abroad, and IELTS General Training, required for work, training, or migration purposes (commonly for Australia, Canada, and the UK). Listening and Speaking are identical across both formats — only Reading and Writing content differs.

    Who Should Take IELTS?

    • Students applying to universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and other English-speaking countries
    • Working professionals seeking employment or professional registration abroad
    • Migration applicants pursuing permanent residency in countries like Australia, Canada, or the UK
    • Anyone who needs to demonstrate English proficiency for visa, education, or employment purposes

(Confirm with client which format — Academic, General Training, or both — the institute primarily coaches for, so this section can be tailored accordingly.)

Test Format — Listening & Speaking (Same for Both Formats)

    Section Duration Format
Listening 30 minutes 40 questions across 4 recorded sections — conversations, monologues, and academic discussions
Speaking 11–14 minutes Face-to-face interview, in 3 parts — introduction, individual long turn, and two-way discussion

The Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day as the written sections, or up to a week before or after, depending on the test center.

    Test Format — Reading

    Format Duration Content
Academic 60 minutes, 40 questions, 3 passages Academic texts — factual, descriptive, or analytical content from books, journals, and academic sources
General Training 60 minutes, 40 questions, 3 sections Everyday texts — notices, advertisements, workplace documents, and general-interest material

    Test Format — Writing

    Format Duration Tasks
Academic 60 minutes Task 1: Describe/summarize a chart, graph, or diagram (150 words)  •  Task 2: Formal essay on a given topic (250 words)
General Training 60 minutes Task 1: Write a letter — formal, semi-formal, or informal (150 words)  •  Task 2: Essay giving your opinion on an issue, in a more personal tone (250 words)

    Scoring

IELTS is scored on a 9-band scale, with each of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) scored individually. Your overall band score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. There is no pass or fail — the required band score depends entirely on the university, employer, or immigration authority you’re applying to.

IELTS One Skill Retake: Many test centers now allow candidates to retake a single module to improve one specific section’s score, rather than the entire test.

Skills & Areas Covered in Our Course

    • Listening: Note-taking strategies, question-type familiarity (multiple choice, matching, form completion, diagram labelling), exposure to varied accents (British, Australian, Canadian, American)

    • Writing: Task 1 structuring (data description or letter writing), Task 2 essay planning and argumentation, grammar and vocabulary refinement, examiner-style feedback on practice essays

Common Questions Before You Reach Out

What's the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

Listening and Speaking are identical in both. Reading and Writing differ — Academic uses university-level texts and a data-description Writing Task 1, while General Training uses everyday texts and a letter-writing Task 1.

No, there is no negative marking. Listening and Reading are scored on correct answers only, while Writing and Speaking are assessed against band descriptors.

Each of the four sections is scored individually on a 0–9 band scale, and your overall score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest half or full band.
